Stan James review
Note to readers: It was announced in late 2017 that the Stan James brand would disappear and existing customer accounts would be migrated to the Unibet platform. We recommend signing up as a new customer to Unibet.
Welcome to our Stan James review. We will be taking an in-depth look at all facets of the Stan James sportsbook, including details of the welcome offer, betting options, mobile app and more.

Welcome offer: 4/5
A fairly strong and straightforward welcome offer greeted us at the commencement of this Stan James review. New customers simply have to deposit and place a £10 bet on any sports market at odds of 4/5 (1.80) or more. In return, they receive a £10 free bet within 24 hours of the qualifying bet being settled, which is valid for seven days after being issued. Any returns from the free bet are credited exclusive of the stake. While the sum of the bonus isn't particularly remarkable, the terms and conditions are straightforward and make it easy to top up your balance quickly.

Betting markets: 4/5
Stan James has developed a reputation for consistently providing strong betting options across a wide variety of sports. We found that to be the case for the most part during our Stan James review, with 25 sports and extensive markets for each available at the time of writing. This may be slightly less than at the major bookmakers but remains impressive. Some of these categories weren't sports-related, with the ‘novelty' section encompassing a wide range of betting options on anything from popular UK TV shows such X Factor to major elections across the world. Popular UK and Irish sports such as darts, rugby league, rugby union, hurling and snooker are covered in full, while there is also an excellent spread of popular sports such as football, basketball, motorsport and US sports. Most importantly, each sports category, including nichè options such as swimming and ten pin bowling, is accompanied by deep markets that pave the way for varied betting options.
Fans of UK and Irish horse racing are in for a treat as our Stan James review found these odds to be among the best in the industry for thoroughbred action. There are also betting options for racing across the globe, along with virtual racing, but the best odds are available on domestic markets. Other sports to note in terms of value are tennis, golf, darts and snooker, while the all-important football odds also matched the likes of Bet 365 and Paddy Power for the most part. The key with Stan James is consistency; beyond horse racing there was nothing overly sensational to report in terms of value, but the vast majority of their odds were at least relative to major competitors.
Mobile app: 3.5/5
The Stan James betting app comes with a host of features and includes all the extensive betting markets available through the website. But the app, available for iOS and Android users, doesn't boast the silky interface and user-friendliness that some other sportsbooks offer through their mobile platforms. The look and feel of the app is a little clunky, and while users will quickly adjust and learn to navigate it, we couldn't help but feel that mobile wagering was a little bit laboured during our Stan James review. This was particularly the case when betting on multiple markets at once, which requires a bit of fiddling around to go back and forth. On the plus side, an excellent results, live scores and live commentary service is featured on the app.
Live betting & streaming: 3.5/5
In-play betting options for football, basketball, baseball and golf were plentiful during our Stan James review. The ‘Event View' option for each live betting market was also very helpful in neatly breaking down the various betting options available. By the same token, in-play schedule assists in planning out all of your live betting plays. The sports covered with in-play markets tended to be reserved for the aforementioned options, which was a letdown. In terms of live streaming, the options are limited to horse racing from the UK and Ireland. As is common among UK bookmakers, customers must place a bet on any horse racing market of at least £1 in order to view the streams. We also encountered some “At the Races” and “Racing UK” video feeds. The spread of races streamed live is comprehensive, but to match its rivals Stan James urgently needs to add more sports to its live streaming offering.
Payment options: 4/5
|Payment method||Minimum deposit||Transaction fee||Processing time|
|Bank transfer||£5||None||2-5 business days|
While the payment options are modest in number, a low minimum deposit that will appeal to beginner bettors and no fees impressed during this section of our Stan James review. Additionally, every deposit method can be used for withdrawals, though paysafecard users should note a rather high £100 minimum withdrawal for that particular payment method.
Customer service: 4/5
|Contact method||Live chat||Telephone|
|Access details||Head to Help and Support and click Live Chat||0800 211 firstname.lastname@example.org|
Bettors have access to a world-class 24/7 service, which impressed us during our Stan James review for its responsiveness and excellent customer care. Live chat can be accessed even without being logged in and was incredibly fast in our experience. The Gibraltar-based call centre, too, is renowned for handling queries – including providing up-to-date information on markets – quickly and professionally.
Overall rating: 4/5
Our Stan James review found there was room for improvement in the mobile betting and live streaming aspects of the service. However, there were enough reasons to be impressed with the service as a whole. The excellent wagering options will appeal to UK-based bettors, who also have access to outstanding customer support and an easy-to-access welcome offer. That welcome offer will reward bettors with a £20 free wager once they have placed a first sports bet of £10 on odds of at least 4/5 (1.80).
